After breakfast at the hotel, we will travel together to the hidden gem of Ailao Mountain in Yunnan Province. The journey takes approximately 3.5 hours via expressway. Along the way, you can enjoy the scenery and experience the charm of nature. Around noon, we will arrive at Gasa Town in Xinping County, where you can experience the local Dai cuisine in a small village at the foot of Ailao Mountain. After lunch, we will enter the heart of Ailao Mountain. The first thing that catches your eye is the [Nan'en Waterfall], which hangs high above the cliff, cascading down to form a spectacular curtain of water. Standing before the waterfall, you will be awestruck by its grandeur, feeling as if you are in a fairyland.
We then arrived at the hidden gem of Ailao Mountain, the Shimen Gorge. Here, the gorge is deep and secluded, with towering cliffs on both sides and a clear stream meandering through the middle. We hiked along the stream to experience the tranquility of the Ailao Mountain gorge; you'll feel a unique kind of beauty. It's said that a trip to Ailao Mountain is incomplete without visiting Shimen Gorge. Because its natural scenery is so similar to Jiuzhaigou, it's often called "the Jiuzhaigou of Ailao Mountain" by tourists.
That evening, we stayed at a guesthouse in the Ailao Mountain scenic area, convenient for photographing the sunrise and sea of clouds the next day (please understand that accommodation conditions in guesthouses on the mountain are limited).
Day 3: Sunrise and Sea of Clouds → Light Hiking in the Primeval Forest → Shuangjiang → Cangyuan Hulu Town
▷Accommodation: Guesthouse or farmhouse within the Ailao Mountain Scenic Area
▷Meals: Breakfast included; Lunch/Dinner: On your own (AA system)
▷Distance: 245km ▷Driving Time: 3.5h
Early morning departure to watch the sunrise over Ailao Mountain. The sunrise and sea of clouds at Ailao Mountain are spectacular, with the best season for viewing them being from October to May of the following year. The warm air from the low-altitude valleys meets the cold air sliding down the mountains from higher altitudes, creating a dreamlike and enchanting sea of clouds, especially spectacular in autumn and winter. You can see the clouds rolling and surging, with mountains appearing and disappearing amidst the ever-changing scenery.
After breakfast, we will travel to the [Jinshan Primitive Forest] for a free stroll. The forest is like something out of a movie, with trees and paths covered in moss and various plants, boasting extremely high levels of negative oxygen ions. After our hike through the Ailao Mountain Primitive Forest, we will head to Cangyuan, passing through Shuangjiang Lahu, Wa, Blang, and Dai Autonomous County. We can have lunch in this county with the longest name in China. After lunch, we will visit [Hulu Town] in Cangyuan, a pedestrian street that blends commerce with local culture. In the evening, we can enjoy the Wa ethnic minority's specialty dish, the [Wa King's Banquet], experiencing the wild beauty of Yunnan cuisine. We will stay overnight in a hotel in Cangyuan County.
Day 4: Wa Mountain Cloud Sea → Yonghe Port → Wengding Primitive Village → Chinese Painting Gallery → Lancang
▷Accommodation: 4-star luxury hotel in Lancang (based on online reviews)
▷Meals: Breakfast included; Lunch/Dinner: On your own (AA system)
▷Distance: 236km ▷Distance: 4.5h
After breakfast, travel to Wa Mountain to admire the breathtaking 【Wa Mountain Cloud Sea】, a fairyland-like spectacle that can be seen year-round. The cloud sea is particularly spectacular in autumn and winter. After viewing the Wa Mountain Cloud Sea, proceed to 【Yonghe Port】, which faces Wa State in Myanmar. Take photos at this southwestern gateway to China. Afterwards, we arrived at the soon-to-be-disappeared primitive tribal village of Wengding (electric cart included). Upon arrival at the village entrance, "Brother Black Bear" and "Black Pearl" were already waiting to greet us, singing and dancing to welcome our guests from afar. The entire morning was dedicated to free exploration of Wengding, wandering among the traditional thatched huts and experiencing the life of the Wa people.
Nearly a hundred traditional Wa thatched-roof houses are nestled deep in these mountains, preserving the original Wa architectural style and customs. It is not only the best-preserved primitive village but also a particularly unique place within the Wa mountain community. After visiting Wengding Village, we will drive to the "Chinese Painting Gallery," a natural masterpiece resembling a richly colored traditional Chinese landscape painting. The murals rise steeply from the cliffs, some forming cliff faces, others jagged and riddled with honeycomb-like karst formations, like a giant mural depicting the vicissitudes of the ancient land. We will then visit one of the ancient cliff paintings, the "Cangyuan Cliff Paintings," where ochre-red paintings are painted on gray limestone walls. The local Wa people call them "Randianmu," meaning paintings on rocks. These images vividly record various scenes of the ancestors' production and life. After the visit, we will proceed to Shangyun Township or Lancang County to check into our hotel, depending on the schedule.
Day 5 Lancang → Ximeng Mengsuo Longtan → Longmoye Holy Land → Menglian Nayun Ancient Town → Return to Hotel
▷Accommodation: Lancang 4-star luxury hotel (based on online reviews)
▷Meals: Breakfast included; lunch and dinner at your own expense (AA system)
▷Driving distance: 165km ▷Driving time: 3.5 hours
After breakfast, we will drive to Ximeng, the holy land of the Wa people. 【Mengsuo Longtan】is a freshwater lake in a tropical rainforest. The area is densely forested and shrouded in mist year-round. Countless water buffalo skulls hang from the treetops and cliffs in the deep valley. Upon arrival, we will stroll along the beautiful Mengsuo Longtan, passing the 【Longmoye Holy Land】, which is adorned with buffalo skulls. The Wa people, who have lived on the Awa Mountains for generations, believe in animism and have revered the buffalo as a sacred symbol and totem since ancient times. Stepping into Longmoye, one is greeted by solemn and majestic bull heads in various shapes and sizes, which possess both visual impact and spiritual awe, allowing one to experience the power of primal worship.
After the visit, we continued to the distinctive Dai ethnic ancient town, [Nayun Ancient Town], a town with a history of over 700 years. The Menglian Xuanfusi Office, located on a high point in the upper town, is surrounded by the Upper and Middle Town Buddhist temples. Covering over 10,000 square meters, the Xuanfusi Office was the official residence of a Tusi (chieftain) during the Qing Dynasty in Yunnan, and is the best-preserved of the 18 Tusi offices in Yunnan. In contrast to the opulent Tusi office, the Buddhist temples are serene and tranquil, with vibrant murals depicting Dai historical legends on the walls of the main hall. Next, we stopped by the Menglian Golden Pagoda for a photo opportunity, and in the afternoon, we returned to Lancang County to check into our hotel.
Day 6: Lancang → Laodabao Music Town → Jingmai Mountain Ancient Tea Garden → Nuogan Ancient Village → Wengji Ancient Village
▷Accommodation: Guesthouse within Jingmai Mountain Scenic Area;
▷Meals: Breakfast included; lunch and dinner at your own expense (AA system)
▷Distance: 100km ▷Driving Time: 2 hours
After breakfast, we will depart for the renowned Lahu village, [Laodabao-Lahu Music Town]. Walking into the village, under a canvas of blue sky, the rows of blue-tiled wooden houses, with gourd and guitar elements, showcase the elegant and refined culture of the Lahu people. Some call it a "hermit's backyard." The Lahu people's name means "tiger-hunting people." We will visit a Lahu family, see traditional farming tools, the birthplace of Lahu musical instruments, and learn about the past and present of the Lahu people in a stilted house. "They can sing as soon as they can speak, and dance as soon as they can walk" is the pride of the Lahu people.
After the tour, we will travel by car to Jingmai Mountain. Our first stop will be Nuogan Ancient Village, the filming location of the TV series "Coffee or Tea". The Dai people here may differ from the Dai people in your impression. The Dai people who used to live in Jingmai Mountain have both the gentleness of traditional Dai people and the boldness of the mountains. What is truly amazing is the simplicity and peace of Nuogan Ancient Village. The original stilted buildings are well preserved, and the people live freely in the village. The peaceful atmosphere has been praised by many as a "true paradise on earth".
Afterwards, we visited the Ancient Tea Garden, also known as the "Millennial Ancient Tea Garden," which is the largest known artificially cultivated ancient tea garden, with a vast area containing thousand-year-old tea trees. This place is born of tea and focuses on tea, with the ancient tea garden being particularly famous. Though unassuming in appearance, it boasts a long history. We strolled through the ancient tea garden, the air slightly fragrant with tea. We then visited the Tea Ancestor Temple on Jingmai Mountain, a site that preserves and inherits the historical and cultural relics of tea from the Lancang River basin, the world's origin of tea, and a collection and concentrated presentation of the tea ancestor culture scattered among various ethnic groups.
Finally, we arrived at Wengji Ancient Village, a place renowned for its beautiful natural scenery and distinctive ethnic characteristics, known as the "Millennial Bulang Ancient Village." Here, we explored this ancient tea village with a thousand-year history, a secluded village deep in the mountains, where over a thousand years of history have been preserved, and its rich aroma still lingers. That evening, we stayed at a farmhouse inn in Jingmai Mountain.
Day 7: Jingmai Mountain Sea of Clouds → Jingzhen Octagonal Pavilion → Xishuangbanna (Disband)

▷Meals: Breakfast included; lunch and dinner at your own expense (AA system)
▷Distance: 150km ▷Driving Time: 3.5H
In the morning, weather permitting, you can photograph the spectacular Sea of Clouds over Jingmai Mountain. After photographing the sea of clouds, leave Jingmai Mountain and head to the hidden gem of Menghai, Xishuangbanna—the Jingzhen Octagonal Pavilion. Seek out a lost Buddhist kingdom. The Jingzhen Octagonal Pavilion is the only well-preserved Theravada Buddhist ordination hall in China, its value far exceeding the building itself. With its Han-style brick foundation, Dai-style wooden structure, and Burmese and Thai decorations, it bears witness to the cultural network between southern Yunnan and Southeast Asia. Afterwards, travel to Jinghong, Xishuangbanna, concluding your unforgettable Insect Valley journey.
